Global Dinner Party funds invested in future MS researcher
Using MSIF’s Global Dinner Party initiative, the MS Society in Switzerland raised money to award a grant to Ruth Etzensperger, a biology student who studied at Zurich University, to enable her to travel to the UK to do an MS-related PhD at Oxford University.

Ruth is undertaking her PhD at the MRC Human Immunology Unit, Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, at the Medical School of the University of Oxford with Professor Lars Fugger, MD, PhD. One of the major scientific achievements of Prof Fugger has been the creation of a triple transgenic mice model for MS that utilises human class II (HLA DR2), human CD4 and T-Cell Receptor. This model seems to mimic the clinical characteristics of MS in humans, thus providing an in vivo disease model which may be used as a tool for further understanding of the disease.

Ruth EtzenspergerRuth said, “It is very unique system and I am really enjoying the work. I am very grateful to the Swiss MS Society who awarded me a grant which pays for my living expenses while I am studying here.” She also receives a scholarship from Lincoln College in Oxford (where she lives) that pays her university fees.

Ruth became interested in studying MS when she was at the University of Zurich because a friend was diagnosed with the disease - “I wanted to understand it more”. It was later, during an immunology lecture when she had to decide what subject to specialise in that she chose to do further study in MS.

“I have enjoyed studying in another country and I think it is good for people to broaden their horizons. I love Oxford – it is a beautiful place and it has a unique academic structure. I have met many great people.” Ruth plans to stay in Oxford for two or three more years to finish her PhD and then do a post-doc in MS or auto-immunity.

“I feel very lucky to have had this opportunity.”
