MSIF and the MS Society of Canada, Calgary and Area Chapter, received Friends of Canada Awards, at simultaneous ceremonies in the UK and Canada, linked by telecast, on 21 October 2009.

Mark Wolff, Executive Director of the MS Society of Canada, Calgary and Area Chapter, accepted the local Award, which recognised the programmes and services the Chapter offers to people with MS in the local community.
In London, Peer Baneke, CEO, and Sarah Finch, Publications Manager, of MSIF received an Award recognising the work being done at the international level. The Award includes a CA$5,000 research package, which MSIF will use to support membership development and research sponsorship opportunities.
The Friends of Canada Awards were made by the City of Calgary, the Government of Canada and the Canadian High Commission to provide support to not-for-profit organisations within Canada and internationally. In this first year of the Awards, ten organisations in Alberta, Canada, were honoured, along with their international counterparts.
"The Friends of Canada Awards celebrate the excellent work done by not-for-profit groups to benefit their local communities. They also recognise the importance of international links in research, advocacy and communication. Our Award will benefit MSIF members worldwide." Peer Baneke, MSIF CEO.
The MS Society of Canada, Calgary and Area Chapter's work for people with MS has also been recognised by the Donner Canadian Foundation. The Foundation gave them an Award of CA$2,500 for Excellence in the Delivery of Services to People with Disabilities.
