MSIF awards six 2007 Du Pré Grants to young MS researchers
MSIF is delighted to announce that six young MS researchers have been awarded Du Pré Grants to allow them to study in another country.

The successful candidates are from, and travelling to, a range of countries to undertake varied MS research projects for between 10 weeks and one year. The aim is to encourage cross-fertilisation of skills through collaborative research projects.

This year's recipients are:

  • Stephen Bramow (Denmark) will spend time at the Center of Brain Research, Austria to study Inflammation and remyelination in progressive MS.

  • Carina Ferrari (Argentina) will travel to the University of Cambridge, UK to address the effect of CNS demyelination on axonal vs neuronal survival and the manipulation of gene expression in neurons following demyelination.

  • Nilufer Kale (Turkey) will be based at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, USA to undertake research into remyelination in chronic MS autopsies, the persistence of immunopattern heterogeneity into the chronic stage of MS, and the establishment of a DNA tissue database for future genetic studies through the phenotyping of MS cases for remyelination.

  • Maria Katsara (Greece) will travel to the Austin Research Institute, Australia to study immunotherapy of MS using synthetic analogues of myelin epitopes.

  • Janek Vilisaar (Estonia) will study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, USA looking at the effects of IL-17 on human neurons and astrocytes.

  • Hainqin Zhang (China) will travel to the University of Melbourne, Australia to develop a coordinated approach to the assessment of axonal injury as a future platform for the assessment of axonal protective therapies in MS.
The successful candidates were selected by the members of the MSIF International Medical and Scientific Board's (IMSB) Scientific Oversight Group.

MSIF awards Du Pré Grants twice a year to young MS researchers from around the world. To read more about the awards and their eligibility criteria, please click here.
