UK Woman with MS Elected to Chair International Federation
Mrs Phillips, who has multiple sclerosis, has been chairman of the UK MS Society since 1998 and was a trustee for six years previously. She has been a member of the board of the International Federation since 1997.
She is a non-executive director of the North Essex Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust and a former trustee of Leonard Cheshire.
"I am honoured and delighted to be taking on this new challenge on behalf of the 2.5 million people estimated to have MS across the world and the millions more affected by it as families, carers and friends," she said. "Great strides are being taken in care and research and the Federation plays a crucial role in helping established and recently-formed societies to share innovation, information and good practice."
A former tennis coach, Mrs Phillips, who is 61, was diagnosed with MS in 1981. For 10 years she chaired the UK MS Society's Colchester branch. She lives with her husband, Peter, in Coggeshall, Essex, and they have two grown-up children.
MS is the most common disabling neurological disease affecting young adults in the western world.
