Denmark, August 12th, 2004 On behalf of the John and Birthe Meyer Foundation, Mrs. Birthe Meyer has presented the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Society with a donation of 1.7 million Euros. This amount will in full be directed towards international multiple sclerosis research at the Sylvia Lawry Centre in Munich.
“We are extremely grateful for this large donation, which can be a decisive factor for future research in multiple sclerosis”, says Mr. Peter Kauffeldt, Managing Director of the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The research centre in Munich was established four years ago in a joint effort by national MS societies in 45 countries - Denmark being among these – united in the global umbrella organisation MSIF (Multiple Sclerosis International Federation). “Some of the most interesting and promising multiple sclerosis research takes place in this very centre”, Peter Kauffeldt continues. He has been dedicated to the establishment of the centre; in part as a member of the board of MSIF, as well as by virtue of his position as president of the European MS platform (EMSP).
The international centre's objective is to collect and process results from MS research in order to improve and simplify future trials focused on medical treatments of MS. At present, data corresponding to 75,000 patient years has been collected, comprising 90 percent of all existing relevant data from MS research worldwide. Peter Kauffeldt: “This virtual focus on treatment has major ethical advantages, because the researchers can avoid subjecting groups of ‘real’ patients to prolonged therapies consisting only of placebo and no actual treatment”.
“The 1.7 million secures the project for five years. The donation can contribute to raising research projects worldwide to another level, and researchers can have a well-founded hope that we might take a major step towards solving the riddle of multiple sclerosis”.
