Oral fingolimod (FTY720) for relapsing multiple sclerosis

summary: This study tested Fingolimod, an oral immunomodulator, against placebo to reduce disease activity in 281 patients with RRMS, as measured by a reduction in gadolinium-enhancing lesions on MRI. Over a six month period and twelve month extension, the Fingolimod-treated groups had lower relapse rates and less gadolinium enhancement on MRI. There were a variety of adverse events associated with the treatment, including one case of encephalopathy.
