summary: Diagnosis of MS consists of the demonstration of dissemination in space and time of the characteristic demyelinating process occurring in the central nervous system. Current diagnostic criteria that consider dissemination in space for relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and primary progressive MS (PPMS) show significant differences. This means that the diagnostic process may become very difficult, especially for people suffering from PPMS. The results of this study suggest that the unification of the current criteria for dissemination in space for RRMS and PPMS should be seriously considered in future revisions of the diagnostic criteria for MS.
