The previous chapters of this book primarily review conventional medical therapies for MS. In this chapter, unconventional medical therapies are considered. These unconventional therapies are important to review because many people with MS and other chronic diseases are interested in and use these therapies. Among unconventional therapies, there is much variability in the quality of the available information and also in the effectiveness, safety, and cost of the therapies. Consequently, it is especially important to be knowledgeable and cautious in this area. This chapter provides background information about unconventional medicine, strategies for evaluating unconventional therapies, and MS-specific information about unconventional therapies that are popular or are particularly relevant to MS.
