Strengthening MS connections across the MENA region
NMSS UAE and MENA MS Societies share resources and learnings.
Last updated: 30th September 2025
MSIF’s 2023-2027 strategy aims to build a stronger, broader, global MS movement, fostering collaboration with regional MS networks. On 4 September, MS societies from across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) gathered online for a regional exchange facilitated by MSIF and hosted by the National MS Society UAE (NMSS UAE). The meeting in September was the first dedicated space for dialogue between NMSS UAE and MENA MS organisations, opening the way for stronger partnerships and knowledge sharing across the region.
Introduction
The session opened with introductions from societies representing Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, Sudan, Bahrain, Jordan, Morocco, Syria, and the UAE. Participants welcomed the opportunity to connect with NMSS UAE and explore ways to share knowledge and resources across the region. MSIF’s role in facilitating the dialogue and creating opportunities for regional cooperation was also recognised before moving into the presentations.
The NMSS Resource Centre
The NMSS UAE presented its comprehensive resource centre, designed to support people living with MS at every stage of their journey. The platform offers:
- Practical guides on mental health, nutrition, and family planning.
- A dedicated children’s guide to help families explain MS in clear and age-appropriate ways.
- Resources to support physical wellness, including tailored exercise programmes that can be accessed from home.
- An interactive “MS Journey Map”, outlining the pathway from early symptoms and diagnosis to long-term treatment and care.
- A wide selection of FAQs and educational materials addressing daily life with MS.
These resources aim to empower people with MS to live more fully, reduce stigma, and raise awareness while also supporting caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals.
Regional engagement and discussion
Following the presentation, MS societies from MENA engaged in an open discussion with NMSS UAE, asking questions about adapting materials to Arabic and local contexts, and exploring opportunities for future cooperation. NMSS UAE expressed its commitment to collaborating with the region and welcomed continued engagement with Arab societies.
The meeting also served as a valuable catch-up session for regional organisations. Participants shared updates on their recent activities and future plans, highlighting advocacy efforts, patient support initiatives, and new projects in development. This exchange reinforced the importance of peer-to-peer learning and solidarity across the region.
Outcomes and next steps
The event underlined how international partnerships can accelerate progress for people living with MS everywhere. As one participant summarised: ‘together we are stronger, and together we can make a real difference.’
The meeting concluded with stronger connections between MENA societies and NMSS UAE. Participants agreed on the importance of continuing similar gatherings, both to exchange practical resources and to deepen collaboration across borders.
